New year, new beginning

As we start 2019, there is no better time to think about the year ahead and what you would like to achieve over the next 12 months.  What is your tennis new year’s resolution?  What are you going to do that will make the biggest difference to your game?

As the new tennis year gets underway, the professionals have already started their seasons and any changes that need to be made are already in place.  But what about the rest of us?  Whatever level you play at, there are always things you can do to help you improve.

No matter how often you play, could you commit to getting on court more regularly this year?  If you are a club player and your season normally starts in the spring, could some indoor practice during the winter help you get ready for the season earlier than normal? Could you add some extra hitting sessions to your routine to help get you ready for your next matches?  Who do you know who you could ask to hit with over the next few weeks?

If you are a singles player could some extra doubles practice help improve your game?  Or could some more doubles training sharpen up your skills for your next singles tournament? If you usually play in your local club doubles league, have you ever thought about entering some singles tournaments?  If you are a regular tournament player, how often do you review your tournament schedule? Could you benefit from going to some different places and playing some different opponents?

Is there one shot that you really want to improve?  Have you ever took the time to think about your strengths and weaknesses of your game?  Could making changes to your serve or backhand make all the difference? If you spend most of your time playing, a few individual or group lessons with your local coach could really give you the advantage you need.

Away from the court, could you improve your fitness to help develop your game? Do you have the physical skills to support your technique and tactical knowledge?  No matter how good you are, would it help your game to be faster or stronger?  Could some time in the gym help you improve your tennis?

Sometimes we are all so busy we don’t taker a step back and think about our tennis and make necessary plans.  Where do you want your game to be one year’s time and what can you do now to make sure you achieve your goals?  As the saying goes, if you keep doing the same things, you will only ever get the same results.

So what are you waiting for? It’s time to make some changes that could make the 2019 tennis year your best yet!
