New tennis season predictions

As the 2017 tennis season is about to get underway, here are my thoughts on who will be the movers and shakers over the next 12 months in the tennis world.

Every year, a group of us predict who we think will be the Grand Slam champions for the coming year but also who the top 10 ranked players will be on the WTA Tour.  I must confess my success has been a bit mixed over the past 5 years we have been doing this but here are my thoughts none the less.

I would expect Andy Murray to start the year in similar form to the the way he ended 2016 and with lots of points on offer and the momentum he has behind him, I would see Murray coming out victorious in both the Australian Open and at Roland Garros.  I think the second half the men’s season could follow a similar pattern to 2016 but this time it will be Djokovic hunting down Murray who has all the points to defend in the second half of the year.

In the women’s game, I see some continued success for Angelique Kerber, who had such a fantastic season in 2016 but I see Serena getting back to her happy place and bringing home more majors before the year is done.  Here are my predictions:

Australian Open
Andy Murray and Angelique Kerber

Roland Garros
Andy Murray and Serena Williams

Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams

US Open
Andy Murray and Serena Williams

With regards to forecasting the end-of-year Top 10 players on the WTA Tour, this is a bit of fun, and is quite hard to predict.  Certainly from 12 months ago, we have seen a bit of change in the rankings as new players enter the Top 10 for the first time whilst others regain their place.

If my Grand Slam predictions do come true then that would see Serena reclaiming World Number 1.  I expect Angelique Kerber and Dominika Cibulkova to maintain on their success from 2016 and keep their places. Similarly, having finished with a career-high, year-end ranking I would expect Madison Keys to also solidify her place. Life will be tough though for Keys and for Britain’s Johana Konta to match their success of 2016 and they have certainly both raised the bar for themselves. I would expect to see Monica Puig to continue to move forward after such an exciting season, the highlight of which was her Gold Medal at the Rio Olympics.  I have followed Puig’s career for a number of years and have enjoyed watching her play live on a number of occasions as well.

For what is is worth, here are my predictions for December 2017:

  1. Serena Williams
  2. Angelique Kerber
  3. Simona Halep
  4. Dominika Cibulkova
  5. Madison Keys
  6. Garbine Muguruza
  7. Maria Sharapova
  8. Agnieska Radwanasa
  9. Eugene Bouchard
  10. Monica Puig

Let me know your thoughts?  Who are your picks for 2017 and who do you think I have got wrong?
